The story of Middlesex University begins in 1878 with St Katherine’s College, a women’s teacher training institution in north London dedicated to serving the local community. Over the following decades, several distinctive colleges joined this lineage: the Ediswan Institute, opened in 1901 to educate factory workers, where the thermionic valve—later crucial to Colossus, the world’s first electronic computer—was developed; and Hornsey College of Art, whose students occupied the campus for six weeks in 1968 in a protest over funding that helped drive UK-wide education reform.
In 1973, these colleges merged to form Middlesex Polytechnic, emphasising career-focused courses and widening access to higher education for local people. In 1992, the institution gained full university status and adopted its current name. Today, it operates campuses in London, Dubai and Mauritius, with over 37,000 students worldwide. In 2025, students voted it London University of the Year.
